MACPAC

SUMMER 2020 TRAMPING BTS

In November 2019 we were supposed to do a couple of days shooting in the Lewis Pass, but due to an unfortunate series of events, some of the huts were closed and we had to revert to plan ‘B’ which ended up working great regardless.

The shoot was located at Bealey Spur, on the way to Arthurs Pass, and provided us with amazing vistas, outlooks and various different setups to get everything we needed. There was no vehicle access so we needed to hike in all our gear, supplies and product.

Harry McArthur came along to assist on this one, helped hike in all the gear and also was responsible for shooting all this awesome behind the scenes content you see here. Thanks to Harry for capturing this.

Allie Rood produced the shoot and also took care of the moving assets, and also sorted out some of the best snacks in the history of hiking shoots.

Now, let’s check out some of the BTS. Cheers again to Harry for providing this.

DAY ONE

Hiked from the car park, shooting along the way (approx 10km) Hiking/Tramping in a range of different areas.

All the gear and some idea…

All the gear and some idea…

Once we arrived at the hut it was time for some hut lifestyle stuff, followed by some important eating and then we went and set up our camping shoot, where we got some amazing late evening light.

Blue hour shooting before all useable light was gone.

DAY TWO

After what can only be described as one of the worst sleeps ever, we went back down to shoot the tents at sunrise and then made our way down to shoot in the trees now that it was a bit more overcast. The reason the sleep was so terrible, was because once the fire in the hut went out a) it got very cold, b) all the rats, mice and possums in the area descended upon us. They were perfectly happy walking around our beds, over our sleeping bags and chewing through our bags to get food. Would not recommend.

All the mice and rats still couldn’t disturb Harry.

Certainly wasn’t as summery the next morning.

Once we were down, it was off to location number two, much more wild, colder, higher and more rugged.
Yes, we did get in a river.
